Home Theatre - The Hard Sell.

While 7 years ago i had a pretty good up to date home theatre system, now it seems a little dated. When dvd came out i just had to buy myself a super duper 5.1 speaker system to go with it. When i first popped in 'The Matrix' (the most popular title at the time), i was completely blown away. While the 2 front, 2 rear and one centre speaker were a new revelation, i think it was the addition of a separate 12 inch subwoofer that really kicked its ass. It was just like being at the movies, except in your own home, i was flabbergasted and ever since have only gone to the movies for the big, special effects laden blockbusters. One movie i couldn't wait to pop in the dvd player after i'd seen it at the movies was 'Fellowship of the Ring.' When i finally got that baby home, the first battle, on the slops of Mt. Doom, knocked me out of my seat. I was in heaven.
Oh how times have changes. I'm not sure if it's just my ears getting used to the 5.1 sound or if it is my receiver that is not as powerful as it once was, but i think it is time to upgrade. Besides i'm a lover of home theatre and i feel i'm being left behind with the advent of Blu-Ray. I guess i'm hoping to get it all at once, i just have to convince the other half that it is a requirement. I've got the big screen, i just need to get the optimum picture from the tv, that's a good argument isn't it? I tell her that with Blu-Ray it'll be like looking through a window. She wonders why i need to do that when we already have perfectly good windows to look out of. Typical, stupid logic!! But i'm going to get one anyway!
Now i have to convince that a new receiver is required to get the most out of the sound. It's no use explaining the technical aspects to her, i just like to use the words immersion and escapism. She wants to know why i'd rather want to think that someone with a gun is going to shoot me or a plane is going to land on me when i could just go outside and listen to the birds twittering in the garden! Still, i'm going to get one too!
I've had a brief look at the shops and naturally i want the most up to date system. First i looked at 6.1 systems, then 7.1 and then 7.2. Wow, two subwoofers, that would be fully sick mate!! And naturally you need good quality speakers to get the most out of the receiver but i'm going to save that argument for a little later. And while i thought that would be a hard enough sell, then i am told that THX are releasing a 10.2 speaker system. For that setup you need, a front-left, top-front-left, front-right, top-front-right, surround-left, top-surround-left, surround-right, top-surround-right, center, top-center and front and back subwoofers. Holy cow, i nearly wet my dacks. I won't just need a Blu-Ray player, Receiver, 10 new satellite speakers, 2 subwoofers, a soundproof room and high quality cables for this new installation, i'm going to need to have my house foundations strengthened. All that is going to be a very hard sell indeed. I think it might be easier to just get a new girlfriend!!
Have a good weekend
Home Cinema used to be so simple.
