The Cable High

Well it seems compromise is an amazing thing. After a little discussion over the weekend, i managed to agree on a brand new 7.1 channel receiver with new speakers and i couldn't be happier. Sure i didn't get the Blu-Ray player but i am now fully prepared for that eventuation. The only daunting thing about it is that i have to get up in my roof and run cables to the speakers which i need to mount on the ceiling. I've never been up there before and judging from the noises we hear sometimes, i'm expecting to find a family of four with a small dog and precariously placed cameras dotted amongst the rafters. Maybe i'm paranoid, i guess i'll find out shortly. Whoever said theres a fine line between pleasure and pain is spot on!
Anyone who has bought a home theatre system with sympathise with me when i say that when you buy a high definition system, it's not optimum unless you purchase quality cables. And boy, i had no idea how much quality cables had upped in price since my last receiver. Previously, i had just used gold RCA plugs for all my audio, video connections. Now for a quality HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable i was looking at between $400 and $600 dollars! What the? The price is monsterous!! Will it make that much of a difference from the component connections i have at the moment? For that price i would be expecting holographic quality.
I decided just to settle on a new cable for the 12" Subwoofer. I had used an old cable i'd had for about 15 years and i felt that i was not getting the full Oomph out of the expensive black box. After much umming and aahing, i decided on spending $160 on a top qualty cable, on the promise that it would 'rock my world.' When i got home and plugged it in, that promise came true. I never thought low frequency bass could truly 'move' me. It seems that the more expensive cables are well worth the money. Why spend thousands of dollars on a theatre system when you don't get true value for money without these long, thin magicians of sound and vision.
I now have no choice but to save, but i certainly won't be paying those exorbitant prices that the retailers charge. Thank god for eBay!
And thankgod i have a new job to pay for them!!
