Working towards Work
July 7th 2008 14:07
Yes, at this present moment i am unemployed, and i'm well aware of the stigma attached to that. It has been 2 weeks since i quit my job and wandered out of the door and into the unknown. It was a difficult decision to make, the price of everything is on the rise and many people are struggling to make ends meet. So what made me think that i can afford to leave a job without first having another one to go to? I am certainly not rich, i was just a factory worker with a small company. Was i willing to bet my house and my standard of living on the fact that i was going to find another job as easy as that? Well, sometimes you need to take a risk. I was extremely unhappy where i worked, in fact most people there were tired of being stretched to the limit and beyond, with no encouragement, poor wages and the constant threat of losing their job delivered by poor management.
I feel sorry for the people, especially the older ones, who feel they have no choice but to put up with the poor working conditions. As well as the constant putdowns from management, many had the innate fear that there was no way anyone else was going to employ them in their later years. Perhaps they were right, and i'm sure the management felt they could treat them like crap for that very reason!! Unfortunately that very situation is dealt with by thousands of people on a daily basis.
Being in my mid thirties, i felt i was still young enough to go out on a limb and take a chance, besides, life is short and if i get caught in a rut now, there may be the chance that i'll wake up in 10 years time, miserable, and thinking that i too will be stuck working in a shithole until the day i die. There has to be better paid, and better conditioned jobs out there so while i have applied for a couple of jobs through agencies, i will not hold my breath for them to come through for me. I get the impression that they advertise for jobs that don't exist just to get you on their books. Am i naive, does everyone know that?
Even if i do get work through an agency, at least i can 'try before i buy.' I'll keep going to places until i find a job i'll be happy with. I'm not searching for the perfect job, with only a VCE pass, i'd be happy just to be content. If i happen to find that sort of job then i would be willing to recommend to others stuck in a rut to do the same. If more people could take a risk and wake up the employers to the fact that the people are an important part of a business, then we may all get a little more respect in the workplace. Wish me luck!
Sorry about the lack of comedy in this post, but i don't feel it's a subject many people, both unemployed and working, find amusing.
